Why Ivory?
Ivory is the national emblem of Côte d’Ivoire, with its trunk raised as a symbol of strength and nobility. However, the use of ivory in the emblem has faced criticism from environmental advocates, as it promotes illegal hunting and ivory trade.
Using ivory in the emblem of a country that hosts one of the largest elephant populations in Africa sends a contradictory message regarding conservation efforts.
Critics argue that it encourages illegal ivory trade and poaching, threatening the survival of these majestic animals. Others believe it is a cultural symbol that deserves respect. Regardless of individual perspectives, it is clear that more must be done to protect elephants and prevent their extinction.
This includes raising awareness about the negative impact of the ivory trade, enforcing stricter laws against poaching, and promoting sustainable tourism as an alternative source of income for local communities.
